Goblet Squat
The single best lower-body strength builder for staying independent — it trains the exact pattern you use to get out of a chair.
One dumbbell or kettlebell (or a heavy household object)
Form tips
- Hold the weight against your chest like a cup of tea, elbows tucked in.
- Sit back and down, keeping your heels planted the whole way.
- Go only as deep as you can while keeping your lower back neutral.
Common mistakes
- Letting the heels lift — widen your stance or place a small book under the heels.
- Rounding the lower back at the bottom of the rep.
- Rushing. Lower for three slow counts, stand for one.
Safety & modifications
If your knees are sensitive, start with a box squat: place a chair behind you and tap it lightly each rep. Stop at pain, not at discomfort — mild muscle burn is fine, sharp joint pain is not.
